Finding Decimal Place Value:
- Arrange the digits of the number into a place-value chart
- Identify the place value of the underlined digit
Finding the Value of a Digit:
- Arrange the digits of the number into a place-value chart
- Identify the place value of the underlined digit
- Multiply the digit by its corresponding place value
Rounding Decimals:
- Locate the digit in the round-off place
- If the digit to the right of the round off place is:
- 4 or less, we leave the digit in the round-off place unchanged
- 5 or more, we increase the digit in the round-off place by 1
- Change all digits after the round-off place into a zero
- Delete all trailing zeros to the right of the decimal point
Comparing Decimal Numbers:
- Compare any whole number parts:
- The decimal number with the larger whole number part is the larger number
- If the two whole number parts are the same:
- Compare digits in each number after the decimal point
- The larger digit belongs to the larger number
- When the two digits are the same, we move right by one digit and repeat the process
- If all digits are equal, the two numbers are equal
Comparing Negative Decimal Numbers:
- Any positive number is larger than any negative number
- If both numbers are negative, the larger negative is the smaller number
