Comparing Fractions with unlike denominators:
- When the numerators are equal, the fraction with the smaller denominator is larger
- When the numerators are not equal:
- Find the cross products:
- Multiply the denominator of the left fraction by the numerator of the right fraction
- Multiply the denominator of the right fraction by the numerator of the left fraction
- The numerator from the larger product belongs to the larger fraction
- The numerator from the smaller product belongs to the smaller fraction
- If the cross products are equal, the fractions are equal
Ordering Fractions:
- Find the LCD of all denominators
- Change each fraction into an equivalent fraction where the LCD is its denominator
- Compare numerators in pairs:
- The larger numerator belongs to the larger fraction
- The smaller numerator belongs to the smaller fraction
