Factoring by Grouping:

  1. Factor out the GCF (if it isn't 1)
  2. Rearrange the terms into two groups where each group has a common factor
    • In some cases, the common factor will be either 1 or -1
  3. Factor out the common factor in each group
    • Depending on the situation, we may need to factor out the GCF or -GCF
  4. If both groups have a common binomial factor, factor it out
    • If no common binomial factor is found, we repeat the process with a different grouping
  5. If no common binomial factor can be found, the polynomial is prime
