In this section, we learn how to simplify complex fractions. A complex fraction is a fraction that contains a fraction in its numerator, its denominator, or both its numerator and its denominator. We will learn two methods to simplify a complex fraction. In the first case, we simplify the numerator and denominator separately then perform the main division. We then simplify the result and report our answer. In the second case, we must first find the LCD of all denominators involved in the complex fraction. We then multiply the numerator and denominator of the complex fraction by the LCD. This eliminates all denominators for us, and at that point, we just need to simplify. In each case, you will get the same answer. Generally, for more complex problems, the LCD method is much faster.
