In this section, we continue to learn how to solve a linear equation in one variable. Here we will concentrate on two specific cases: solving linear equations with fractions, and solving linear equations with decimals. To solve a linear equation with fractions, we can begin by clearing the fractions from the equation. We do this by multiplying both sides of the equation by the LCD of all fractions involved. Once this is done, we can solve the equation using our four-step procedure. It is not necessary to remove fractions from an equation; it simply makes the equation easier to solve. To solve a linear equation in one variable with decimals, we can use a similar approach. We are able to clear the equation of decimals by multiplying both sides of the equation by the appropriate power of ten. This is based on the largest number of decimal places present in the equation. Once the decimals are cleared, we can use our general four-step procedure. Just like with fractions, it is not necessary to clear an equation of decimals; this process only makes solving the equation simpler.
