# Factoring by Grouping

About:

Additional Resources:

In this section, we learn how to Factor by Grouping with a four-term polynomial. With this method, we first rearrange the terms into two groups of two, so that each group has a common factor. We then factor out the GCF or -(GCF) from each group. We look to see if this result yields a common binomial factor. When this occurs, we can factor out the common binomial factor and report our answer. When this step fails to yield a common binomial factor, we rearrange the terms and try a different grouping method. Once we have done enough examples, we will be able to determine if a particular grouping will work very quickly, without going through a lot of tedious scratch work.
