We will tackle these problems with a simple six-step procedure. Step 1: read the problem carefully, this will give us a clear understanding of the objective. Step 2: assign a variable to represent each unknown. Step 3: write two equations using both variables. Step 4: solve the system of linear equations using either substitution or elimination. Step 5: state the answer formally, usually this means we write one or two sentences using the language of our problem. Lastly, we want to check to make sure our math is correct and also that the answer is reasonable in terms of our problem.
