In this section, we learn how to find the mean, median, and mode for a group of numbers. In order to find the mean, (more commonly known as the average) we sum all of the numbers in the group. Once this step is completed, we divide the result by the number of numbers in the group. For example, the mean of 4, 11, and 12 is 9. The sum of the numbers in the group is 27, divide this by the number of numbers in the group which is 3; the result of 27 ÷ 3 is 9. Next, we tackle the median. This is a method to find the middle number in a group of numbers that is arranged from least to greatest. The median is the middle number when the group contains an odd number of numbers. The median is the mean (average) of the two middle numbers when the group contains an even number of numbers. The mode is the simplest of the three to find. The mode is simply the number or numbers that appear most frequently in a group of numbers.
