In this section, we learn how to tackle a problem with multiple operations using the order of operations. In the problem 4 + 2 x 3, how would we know whether to add 4 and 2, or multiply 2 times 3 to get started? The order of operations solves this type of dilemma and enables all parties to get a consistent answer. We generally use the acronym PEMDAS to remember the order of operations. PEMDAS: stands for parentheses (or grouping symbols), perform exponent operations, multiply or divide (from left to right), add or subtract (from left to right).
