In this section, we learn how to graph a linear equation in two variables. In future lessons, we will find quicker and more efficient ways to graph linear equations. For now, we will start by creating a table of ordered pair solutions for our given linear equation in two variables. We then plot those ordered pairs on the coordinate plane and draw a line connecting the points. Additionally, we will learn about the x and y intercepts. The x - intercept is the spot where the graph crosses the x - axis. We can find our x-intercept by plugging in a 0 for y and solving for x. The y - intercept is the spot where the graph crosses the y - axis. We can find our y-intercept by plugging in a 0 for x and solving for y. We can use the x and y intercepts to quickly generate points and create our graph. This method is known as the Intercept Method. Lastly, we will learn about two special case scenarios: horizontal and vertical lines. A horizontal line occurs when we see a line of the form y = k. For any given x value, y always equals the value k. This creates a horizontal line. A vertical line occurs when we see a line of the form x = k. For any given y value, x always equals the value k. This creates a vertical line.
